In 1900's, Barney Prine build a black smith shop, store/salon on the banks of the Crooked River. It quickly became a center for trade and commerce.
Today Prineville has become a mecca for the data storage industry. Sporting several state of the art data storage facilities it continues to attract businesses like Facebook, Google and Apple.
With this influx of new industry, Prineville is experiencing a bit of a renewal. The Downtown area has become a center for community activity and revitalization.
Prineville and the surrounding Central Oregon area is home to a rich culture of hunting and outdoor sports and recreation. Located in Crook County, the city sits just North East of Bend and near all of the Central Oregon out door recreation attractions. Prineville and Ochoco reservoirs are popular fishing and boating destinations. The Prineville Reservoir State Park is a well appointed vacation spot for fishing and water sports. Ochoco National Forest & Crooked River National Grassland reserve is a teaming wildlife and recreation destination
Tech giants such as facebook, Google and Apple have been building data centers; taking advantage of Prineville's low cost energy and land. An influx of private investment has sparked the revitalizing of Central Oregon’s oldest town. Prineville has also attracted high-end resorts and real estate develpoment. Places such as Brasada Ranch and developers like Pahlisch Homes have created high end communities and recreation that have attracted more commerce to the town.

OSU Open Campus has new facilities near the county fair grounds and offer classes from OSU Cascades and COCC.
Central Oregon Community College (COCC) offers lower division transfer programs, some courses in Prineville and via distance education, as well as at their Redmond and Bend campuses. COCC also offers one-year and two-year professional-technical programs, continuing education classes and industry-specific training.
